Telegram Stars vs Premium: Which One Is Worth Buying?
These two are often confused, but they are not the same kind of product: Premium is a subscription that expands what your account can do, while Stars are credit you spend inside Telegram. The right choice depends on how you actually use the app, not on price alone.

Stars or Premium?
This article at a glance
- Premium is a recurring subscription; Stars are one-off payment credit.
- Buying Stars does not make your account Premium, and you do not need Premium to buy Stars.
- Heavy, daily use favours Premium; a single specific purchase favours Stars.
What is Telegram Premium?
Premium is a monthly or yearly subscription, introduced in 2022, that lifts the limits of the free tier. The features stay on your account while the subscription is active and switch off when the period ends.
- Larger uploads and faster downloads
- Higher limits for channels, chat folders and pinned chats
- No sponsored messages in public channels
- Exclusive stickers, emoji, reactions and the Premium badge
- Voice-to-text, in-line chat translation and animated profile photos
For the full feature list and how to activate it, see our Telegram Premium guide.
What are Telegram Stars?
Stars are not a subscription; they are an in-app currency Telegram introduced to simplify digital payments across its ecosystem. Its technical code is XTR, and it works like a wallet: you top up a balance and spend it where you need to.

Quick comparison
| Feature | Telegram Premium | Telegram Stars |
|---|---|---|
| Type of service | Recurring subscription (monthly or yearly) | In-app credit, bought as needed with no commitment |
| Cost model | A fixed amount each period, for as long as you renew | Only what you actually spend |
| Unit of purchase | A period of time (a month or a year) | Predefined Stars packages |
| Main purpose | Lifting the limits of the free tier | Paying inside bots, mini apps and paid content |
| Effect on the account | Enables the Premium badge and features | Does not make the account Premium; it only tops up a balance |
| Access from Iran | Not directly purchasable with an Iranian number and account | In-app purchases go through the same app stores |
| Best for | Heavy users, channel admins and businesses | People paying for one specific service or piece of content |
How to compare the cost
A number-to-number comparison is misleading, because the two are not measured in the same unit: Premium buys you a period of time, Stars buy you an amount of credit. The useful question is how often, and for what, you actually pay in a given month.
Premium: a fixed, recurring cost
Premium buys you a period of time: every feature stays available while the subscription is active and switches off when the period ends. Buying inside the app adds the App Store or Google Play fee on top, and the yearly plan usually works out cheaper than paying month to month.
Stars: a one-off cost
Stars are priced at a nearly flat rate: about two cents per Star, and that rate is effectively the same in small and large packages — a bigger package does not make each Star cheaper. If you make one small purchase a month, you pay a fraction of a monthly subscription.
Official Stars package prices
Telegram publishes its own reference prices for buying Stars through the App Store or Google Play, in USD:
| Stars | Price |
|---|---|
| 50 Stars | $0.99 |
| 100 Stars | $1.99 |
| 500 Stars | $9.99 |
| 1,000 Stars | $19.99 |
| 2,500 Stars | $49.99 |
Telegram notes these are estimates for purchases billed in USD with 0% VAT — your actual charge can vary with your location, payment provider, or local taxes. This is Telegram's own App Store/Play Store price, not Rima's price: on Rima, the exact Stars amount and final price are shown before you confirm payment.
So which is better value?
The short answer: neither is inherently better value — it depends on how you use Telegram.
Choose Premium if…
- You manage several channels or groups every day.
- You regularly send or receive large files.
- Telegram is part of your professional work or business.
Choose Stars if…
- You just want to pay once inside a bot or mini app.
- You want to buy paid content from one specific channel.
- You would rather not commit to a monthly plan or auto-renewal.
One common misconception
Contrary to a claim you will see repeated often, Stars are not tied to Premium: you do not need a Premium account to buy Stars, and buying Stars does not make your account Premium. They are separate products bought separately — which is why they are better understood as complementary than as alternatives.
For users in Iran
Both go through international payment rails: Premium cannot be activated directly with an Iranian number and card, and in-app Stars purchases depend on an App Store or Google Play account. Iranian users therefore usually rely on an intermediary service — in which case the exact amount, the destination account and the final price should all be clear to you before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Premium to buy Stars?
No. Stars and Premium are separate products, and buying Stars does not depend on having a Premium subscription.
Does buying Stars make my account Premium?
No. Stars are only a payment balance inside Telegram; they do not unlock Premium features.
Can I buy any number of Stars?
Telegram sells Stars in set packages. Small packages exist, but you cannot pick an arbitrary amount.
What if I need both?
They are not competitors and can be used together: Premium for account features, Stars for payments inside bots and mini apps.
Whichever you need, check it in Rima
Premium subscriptions and Stars packages are both available through Rima, and the amount, destination account and final price are shown before payment.
