Telegram Premium Features: What You Get
This article at a glance
- Premium is optional — free Telegram stays complete and perfectly usable.
- Alongside the familiar 4 GB uploads and no ads, Telegram has added quieter Premium features: priority for your stories, finer privacy control, and tags on saved messages.
- Gifting Premium to someone else also earns a boost for your channel, if you run one.
What exactly is Telegram Premium?
Premium is an optional subscription that unlocks extra features and higher limits. Telegram remains free, and a subscription is not required for its core messaging features.
If you're already a Premium subscriber, you can also send a subscription as a gift to someone else. If you're looking for a way to pay for digital goods inside bots and mini apps rather than a subscription, see how Telegram Stars work.
What You Get With Telegram Premium
Uploads up to 4 GB
Each file or media item can be up to 4 GB, and free users can still download it.
Faster downloads
Telegram-side speed limits are lifted; your connection and device still affect actual speed.
Voice-to-text
Convert voice and video messages into text when listening isn't convenient.
Advanced chat management
Higher limits for folders, pinned chats, channels and connected accounts.
Stickers, reactions and personalization
Premium stickers, unique reactions, custom emoji, animated profile pictures, profile badges and premium app icons.
Real-time translation
Automatically translate messages in chats and channels into your language.
No ads
No sponsored messages in the channels where Telegram shows them to free users.
The Premium features that get less attention
The list above is what most people notice, but Telegram's recent updates added several more Premium features that are rarely mentioned:
Priority for your stories
Stories from Premium users are shown to an audience ahead of everyone else's. Premium also adds Stealth Mode — viewing other people's stories without registering a view — a story duration you can set instead of the default 24 hours, and the ability to save other people's unprotected stories to your device.
Finer privacy control
Premium users can decide who is allowed to start a conversation or message them, and can hide their own last-seen from specific people without losing the ability to see everyone else's.
Tags on saved messages
In Saved Messages, Premium lets you file messages under tags and filter by those tags later — useful if you keep notes and work references in Telegram.
More chat personalisation
Beyond custom stickers and reactions, Premium adds a wallpaper you can set per chat, and a profile colour.
Who gets the most value?
- People who regularly send or receive large files.
- Channel managers and users who organize many conversations.
- Anyone who uses transcription or translation every day.
- People who rely on Telegram for work or education.

When is the free version enough?
If you mainly use Telegram for everyday messaging, calls, a few channels and regular files, the free version will likely cover your needs.
How Telegram Premium is priced
Telegram has no single global price for Premium; it is set per country in the local currency, so it genuinely differs between users. An annual subscription usually works out cheaper than paying month to month. According to Telegram's own FAQ, buying inside the Apple App Store or Google Play adds those stores' commission on top of the price, while buying through Telegram's official bot does not. Two people can therefore be quoted different amounts for the same subscription period.
For anyone without a way to pay in foreign currency directly, what matters more than the exact figure is that the route is transparent: the subscription period, the destination account and the final amount should all be clear before you pay.
Check before subscribing
- 1Choose the correct account; each account needs its own subscription.
- 2Review the period and final amount before paying.
- 3Use an up-to-date official Telegram app.
- 4Faster Telegram downloads cannot override internet limitations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does uninstalling Telegram cancel Premium?
No. Premium is tied to your Telegram account, and it stays active on any device you sign into.
Can Premium be transferred?
Telegram says subscriptions can't be transferred between accounts, though you can change the phone number on your own account without losing Premium.
Does Premium prevent restrictions?
No. Premium users must follow the same platform rules, and breaking them can still cost you Premium benefits.
Can I gift Telegram Premium to someone else?
Yes, if you're already a Premium subscriber yourself — open the other person's profile to find the "Gift Premium" button and send a prepaid subscription for 3, 6, or 12 months.
If I'm a channel admin and gift Premium, what does my channel gain?
If you have Premium yourself and you administer a channel, every Premium subscription you gift to someone else gives your channel three boosts — on top of the four that your own Premium subscription always provides. For the details, see the Telegram boost guide.
Is gifting Premium the same as Telegram's collectible gifts?
No. Gifting a Premium subscription activates a real subscription for the other person. Collectible gifts are a separate product — decorative items bought with Stars that can be kept or resold on Telegram's marketplace — and have nothing to do with an account's Premium status. To get to know Stars, see the Telegram Stars guide.
