ChatGPT Ads Explained: How Advertising on ChatGPT Works in 2026
ChatGPT has shown ads since February 2026, and any business can now buy them through OpenAI's own Ads Manager. This article explains, without the hype, what the platform is, who sees the ads and where, how you are charged, and when it is worth trying.

ChatGPT Ads: below the answer, for Free and Go users

- Ads are shown only to adult users on the free tier and the Go plan. Plus, Pro and the business and education plans see no ads.
- Ads appear below ChatGPT's answer with a "Sponsored" label. OpenAI says advertisers cannot change answers and never see conversations.
- You pay per thousand impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC). OpenAI itself suggests starting click bids at $3–$5.
- The platform is still in beta and not open in every country; creating an account does not by itself grant access.
What is ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's official advertising platform. Businesses build campaigns in a portal called Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, and their ads are shown in ChatGPT users' conversations. Its history so far is short:
February 9, 2026
Ad testing began for US users; buying was CPM-only, through OpenAI's sales team.
May 5, 2026
The Ads Manager beta, a self-serve portal, opened in the US first, and cost-per-click (CPC) bidding was added.
April–August 2026
Ads reached Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
August 31, 2026
Self-serve went live across 31 European markets; India, the Middle East and North Africa were added to self-serve too.
Now
OpenAI says ads are available in more than 40 countries through its sales team and partners, and a new visual format is being tested.
Who sees the ads?
Most explanations skip this, yet it defines your audience. Ads are shown only to users 18 and over on the free tier and the Go plan, whether logged in or not:
| Plan | Sees ads? |
|---|---|
| Free | Yes — unless the user picks the ad-free option, which comes with tighter limits |
| Go | Yes |
| Plus and Pro | No |
| Business, Enterprise and Edu | No |
| Users under 18 | No, on any plan |
For an advertiser, that means a large audience of Free and Go users — but Plus and Pro subscribers, usually the heaviest users, never see your ad. The plans are compared in our ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro comparison.
How ads are chosen and shown
Ad format
Each ad has the advertiser's name, a favicon, a title, descriptive copy, an image and a landing page, and appears below ChatGPT's answer. OpenAI is also testing a multi-image format that appears during image generation.
Ad selection
Ads are matched on the topic and intent of the current conversation, the landing page, the ad's title and copy, and "context hints" the advertiser provides. Hints are not exact-match keywords; you don't choose which question an ad appears under.
Auction
Eligible ads compete in a relevance-weighted second-price auction, so the highest bid does not win on its own; quality and relevance count too.
Targeting
You can set countries, platforms and your own audience lists (customers or prospects). In the US, geo-targeting goes down to ZIP code.
Ads don't buy answers, and advertisers don't see chats
The most common misconception is that ads can make ChatGPT recommend your brand in its answer. OpenAI says ads run on systems separate from the chat model and advertisers cannot shape or alter answers; the ad always appears separately, labelled Sponsored. In the other direction, chats, memories, names, emails, precise location and IP addresses are never shared with advertisers, who see aggregated reports only. Ads are also kept away from sensitive conversations such as mental health or politics.
How you are charged
The campaign objective decides what you pay for. You set the maximum bid at the ad-group level:
Last checked: October 19, 2026
| Objective | Billed |
|---|---|
| Views / Reach | Per thousand impressions (CPM); you set the maximum CPM |
| Clicks | Per valid click (CPC); OpenAI suggests starting at $3–$5 |
| Conversions | Optimised CPC or CPM (oCPC / oCPM); there is no charge per conversion |
OpenAI publishes no rate card or daily minimum, and the final price is set at auction. That is why the "minimum budget" and "CPM range" figures passed around in blogs aren't printed here: they don't come from an official source and keep moving during the beta. The only official figure is OpenAI's own suggestion to start click campaigns at $3–$5 per click.

Strengths and limits
What works in your favour
Clear intent
Someone asking ChatGPT which laptop to buy for graphic design is at the moment of decision. The ad is tied to that conversation, not to the user's general history.
Reporting
Impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC and CPM, and — once conversion measurement is set up — conversions, all in the portal.
A growing platform
OpenAI says ads have reached a $1 billion annualised run rate, and the country list keeps growing.
What to keep in mind
Still in beta
Features, prices and rules are changing, and the documentation is updated every few weeks. Expect trial and error.
Paying users are out of reach
Plus and Pro subscribers — often the heaviest users — see no ads. If they are your customers, this channel won't reach them.
Limited placement control
The algorithm decides which conversation an ad appears under. You can only steer it with context hints and your copy.
Country access
New accounts can sometimes advertise only in their home country, and signing up in an unsupported country grants no access.
How to get started
- 1
Go to ads.openai.com, sign in with an OpenAI account or create one, and register as an advertiser.
- 2
Add your business details and a payment method. Self-serve card accounts are postpaid: spend accrues and is charged to the card when it reaches the account's payment threshold. That threshold is not a campaign budget or a spend cap.
- 3
Create a campaign and pick its objective (views, clicks or conversions), then set the budget, maximum bid and pacing.
- 4
Upload the ad: title, copy, image and landing page, plus a few context hints about which conversations it fits.
- 5
To measure sales or sign-ups, set up conversion measurement on your site; without it you only see impressions and clicks.
Check Ads Manager's country-availability page first. OpenAI says creating an account in an unsupported country grants no access, and some new accounts can initially advertise only in their home country.
Bottom line: who is it for?
ChatGPT Ads is a new channel with one real advantage: the ad appears at the moment a user is asking about a decision. But it is still in beta, and nobody can say with confidence what costs and results will look like in a few months.
- A good fit if:
- your product is for a general audience, your market is in a supported country, and you can set aside a budget for one to three months of testing.
- Not a fit if:
- your customers are mostly professional AI users who likely pay for Plus or Pro, or you need a guaranteed return.
Frequently asked questions
How much does advertising on ChatGPT cost?
OpenAI publishes no rate card; prices are set at auction. You pay per thousand impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC), and OpenAI itself suggests starting click bids at $3–$5. Daily minimums and CPM ranges quoted in blogs don't come from an official source.
Do ads affect ChatGPT's answers?
OpenAI says no. Ads run on systems separate from the chat model, and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter answers. Ads always appear apart from the answer, labelled Sponsored.
Can advertisers see my conversations?
No. OpenAI says advertisers never receive chats, chat history, memories, names, emails, precise location or IP addresses; they get aggregated performance reports only. Ads are also kept away from sensitive conversations such as health or politics.
How do I use ChatGPT without ads?
Plus, Pro and the business and education plans have no ads. Free users can also choose an ad-free option at the cost of fewer messages and no image tools; that option isn't available on Go.
Can I choose exactly which question my ad appears under?
No. Context hints are not exact-match keywords; they only tell the algorithm what your ad is about. OpenAI's system makes the final choice.
Want ChatGPT without ads?
The Plus plan shows no ads and unlocks ChatGPT's more advanced tools. See how to buy and activate it on the service page.
