ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro: Which Plan Should You Buy?

OpenAI now has three paid tiers, spanning $8 to $200 a month. The difference is not only how much more you get: one of them shows ads and the others do not, which can matter more than any usage limit.

ChatGPT Go vs Plus vs Pro: Which Plan Should You Buy?

AI guide

Go, Plus or Pro?

This article at a glance

  • Go is the cheapest tier, but it shows ads; Plus and Pro do not.
  • The biggest jump in capability is between Go and Plus, not between Plus and Pro.
  • Pro comes in two tiers: $100 and $200 a month.
  • None can be bought directly from Iran — all of them need an international card.

Why you cannot buy directly from Iran

OpenAI does not accept direct payment from Iran, and activating any of these plans requires an international Visa or Mastercard. The restriction has nothing to do with which plan you pick — it is the same for all three — so Iranian users typically go through a currency-payment service to buy and activate one.

Three plans, three use cases

ChatGPT Go — $8/month

The cheapest paid tier, sitting between Free and Plus. Higher message, upload, image-generation and memory limits than Free, plus access to projects and custom GPTs. Rolled out worldwide in January 2026.

ChatGPT Plus — $20/month

The standard tier for regular professional use: broader access to the reasoning model and tools like Agent Mode and Deep Research, with no ads.

ChatGPT Pro — $100 or $200/month

Everything in Plus with several times the usage capacity. The $100 tier is for people who keep hitting the Plus ceiling; the $200 tier carries the highest limits and the largest context window.

These are OpenAI's US list prices, localised in some markets; taxes, currency conversion and payment-provider fees can all change what you finally pay.

The difference most comparisons miss: ads

Since early 2026, OpenAI has been showing ads on the free tier and on Go, while Plus, Pro and the business plans stay ad-free. If ChatGPT is part of your daily work, that difference can matter more than any usage ceiling — and it makes the gap between $8 and $20 wider than a price table suggests.

We deliberately avoid quoting token numbers for the context window: its size depends less on the plan than on the response mode — the same plan has a small window in fast-answer mode and several times that in reasoning mode. Numbers quoted in online comparisons usually ignore that distinction.

Which plan should you pick?

Go

Mostly everyday chat, light writing and a few images, and you just want past the free tier's limits. You can live with ads.

Plus

You use ChatGPT regularly for professional work, content or research. Best value for money, and ad-free.

Pro

You work daily with large volumes of data, complex coding projects or continuous research, and keep hitting the Plus ceiling.

One rule of thumb: the capability gap between Go and Plus is wider than the one between Plus and Pro. Pro is largely Plus with far more capacity, whereas Plus has features Go simply does not have.

Check these before you buy

  • Pin down the exact plan — Go and Plus look close in price but are far apart in capability.
  • Ask whether the account is dedicated or shared; this is the biggest driver of price differences between sellers.
  • Get clarity on support for the full subscription term, not just up to delivery.
  • Agree the refund terms up front, in case the subscription stops working.
  • See the final rial amount before paying — the day's exchange rate moves it.

Because these subscriptions are activated through international payment rails, the seller's transparency is the main thing you are buying. Settle the dedicated-account question, the support term and the refund conditions before you pay, not after.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I buy directly from OpenAI?

Direct payment from Iran is not accepted, and activating any plan requires an international Visa or Mastercard. That is why Iranian users go through a currency-payment service.

How is Go different from the free tier?

Higher message, upload, image-generation and memory limits, plus access to projects and custom GPTs. But like the free tier, it shows ads.

Is upgrading from Go to Plus worth it?

If you keep hitting the limits, need the reasoning mode, or the ads bother you, yes. This is where the biggest jump in capability sits.

What separates the $100 and $200 Pro tiers?

Both offer far more capacity than Plus; the $200 tier carries the highest limits and the largest context window.
